March 2010 Vol. 503
Dwight Icenhower will also amaze you with his Tribute to Elvis.
Welcome to the Michigan Elvisfest
Article from Spotlight, Vol. 503

The Elvisfest began in 2000 in Ypsilanti, Michigan’s Historic Depot Town. Now, every July, Elvis fans flock by the thousands to Riverside Park on the banks of the Huron River to pay homage to the King of Rock ’n’ Roll and to hear the most award-winning professional Elvis tribute artists in North America, as well as other talented legend tribute artists. This not a contest but a true concert with spectacular performances — from the opening act to the final performance; it’s no wonder the Chicago Tribune names it “One of the best music festivals in the Midwest.”

Now in its 11th year, the Michigan ElvisFest, a nonprofit organization and festival officially sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., will return to Ypsilanti on July 9–10, 2010. The event will continue to feature a concertlike atmosphere with live music and spectacular performances including tribute acts to other notable artists such as Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, and Sir Elton John.

Other festival highlights include a Candlelight Vigil to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the King’s death, a Gospel Hour for fans to enjoy Elvis’ favorite Grammy-winning gospel songs, and a car show by America’s Most Wanted Car Club.

A beer tent for adults, Elvis memorabilia and festival gear, and great food will be available.

Shake, rattle, and roll
Audiences at the 2009 festival were treated to these award-winning musicians: The Change of Habit Tribute Band, Chicago’s Elvis Tribute sensation, is dedicated to re-creating the bands of The King. The band incorporates musicians with vast experience within the Elvis Tribute industry, and other professional musical organizations across the country.

Elvis tribute artists included: Stephen Kabakos from Ontario, Canada, an international award-winning tribute artist who executes a authentic, dynamic portrayal covering Elvis’ entire career. Robert Washington from Maine wears the costumes that Elvis made famous with dignity.

Demi Downing is a 12-year-old powerhouse from Adel, Ga. In her own words, “I was born to be the Queen for the King of Rock ’n’ Roll."
Mario Kombou of England has been performing his tribute to Elvis for 15 years. He is touring England with a new musical production The Elvis Years 1954-1977.

Leo Days from Las Vegas, Nev., won first place at the North American International Elvis Tribute Artist contest in 1998. His authenticity mesmerizes audiences of all ages.

Dwight Icenhower of Orlando, Fla., began his career at the age of 16. He took first place in the 2006 King of the Windy City Contest in Chicago.

Other terrific performances were given by Matt King, Leslie, Mich.; Duke Mason, Joplin, Mo.; Chris Ayotte, Canton, Mich.; Matt Joyce, Little Rock, Ark.; and Ted Torres, Orlando, Fla.
